| 30 | SHORT DESCRIPTION: Pen and ink drawing of port/bow view of four-masted ship anchored just off the coast. Coastline, lighthouse and other buildings in background. NOTES: Volume of pen and ink drawings by A.L. Van Name, Jr., M.D. depicting Chesapeake Bay vessels. LABEL COPY: PURNELL T. WHITE Of Baltimore This schooner, one of the last of the Atlantic coast four masters, and long the pride of the port of Baltimore and all who sailed her, was totally dismasted several years ago. She was towed in, and the hull was found to be undamaged. Nothing was done however, until the present time (1942), when due to the shipping scarcity of World War II, she has been bought for further service. It is to be hoped that she will be re-rigged, and will sail again, as the last of the famous line, since her sister, the ALBERT F. PAUL has been posted as missing, probably the prey of a Hun 'pig-boat'. This vessel was the last of the original 13 four-masters of Albert Paul of Baltimore. | CL6070 | ||||||||
| 31 | No image URL. | NOTES: The ram EDWIN & MAUD was built at Bethel, Delaware in 1900. The ram was a type of commercial sailing craft developed in the Chesapeake Bay area, designed expressly to traverse the narrow Chesapeake and Delaware Canal with large lumber cargoes from the lower Chesapeake Bay area and the Carolinas. About 1947, she was converted into a cruise ship for taking passengers about the Bay. In 1954, she was sold and renamed VICTORY CHIMES of Castine, Maine, and left the Chesapeake in June of that year to resume her career as a cruise ship on the Penobscot Bay.
